The full moon meditation in May is declared the day of the most significant spiritual possibility in the year. For Buddhists, the Wesak festival is the time of the birth, enlightenment, and extinction of the Buddha. This is a yearly day of meditation for individuals of all spiritual cultures.
I’m a big believer in the power of taking some time out to meditate under a full moon. The best part of this experience is that it’s free! I love to find a peaceful spot in nature during the full moon, sit and bask in its beauty for an hour or so.
It might sound weird at first, but if you make it into an enjoyable ritual, you’ll be astounded by how it can bring clarity and peace of mind.
As the moonlight washes over me, I focus my attention inward, centering around my breath, allowing myself to relax and become one with the present moment. It might just be my imagination, but each time afterwards I feel tremendously refreshed and connected to something much bigger than myself.
Welcome and Introduction
Take a few moments to center yourself and get comfortable. Allow the tensions of your day to melt away as you take a few deep breaths into your belly, letting go of any stress or worries that are present. Feel the energy of the full moon enter your body and relax with each exhale. As you connect with this powerful energy, allow yourself to be led by it, allowing it to guide your journey today.
Beginning at the top of your head, slowly scan through all parts of your body, becoming aware of what sensations come up for you in each area. Notice any areas that may be tight or uncomfortable, or where you feel tingling sensations or warmth radiating from within. Don’t try to change anything; just observe these feelings and move on when ready.
Awareness and Reflection
The full moon is a powerful time for reflection – its light a natural reminder for us to look inwardly and become aware of our inner world. Take some time now to ask yourself: What do I need? How can I nourish myself better? What patterns am I repeating that I need to let go of? Listen deeply for any answers that arise within you now; take note of any insights that come up during this meditation without judgement before accepting them and allowing them to integrate into your life as needed.
Inhale deeply – imagine air carrying messages from the full moon come in through your nose into the depths of your lungs, spreading throughout all parts of your body with each exhale. Visualize yourself being surrounded by a brilliant white light emanating from the moon itself – feel its feminine energy wash over every single cell in your body with unconditional love and acceptance until you are completely filled up with its energy. Imagine how this would feel if every part of you was illuminated with this magical light – can you feel it? Allow yourself to stay here for as long as needed until you have fully integrated this energy within yourself.
Release & Letting Go
When ready, thank the full moon for her magical presence during this meditation and acknowledge any insight or lessons learned during today’s practice with gratitude before releasing all attachments to it once again into Universal consciousness with love and respect. Allow yourself one final deep breath and open your eyes when ready – feeling refreshed, energized, recharged, connected and calm after today’s practice!
